With a population of less than 3,000, this ranching town offers an idyllic escape from city life. Wimberley began life as a trading post settlement in 1848. Eight years later, William Carvin Winters built a gristmill at the site. The mill changed hands once in 1864, and once again in 1874, when Pleasant Wimberley bought it from the Cude Family. Over the years, the mill expanded to accommodate lumber, cotton, mollases, flour, and shingle production. The mill no longer exists. However, the Winters-Wimberley home is still standing and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
