What makes the perfect bike trail? Idyllic surroundings, smooth paths, beautiful weather? When visiting bike trails Stowe VT, expect all of this and more. Mountain biking is one of the most popular summer activities in Stowe, so much so that it’s been called the “mountain biking mecca” by the famous The Boston Globe. These biking trails are interconnected, well-maintained, and perfect for beginner, intermediate, and expert bikers alike.
Moreover, most of these trails are open to the public and free to use, and you’ll find a wealth of bike shops in the area offering gear, rentals, tune-ups, accessories, and more. What more could you need? You can learn more about the following trails through the Stowe Trails Partnership website as well, which is an organization devoted to building, maintaining, and promoting access to Stowe’s diverse trail network. Explore can’t-miss mountain biking trails below.
If you’re looking for diverse terrain and breathtaking views, biking in the Cady Hill Forest is the way to go. The Cady Hill Forest is the Stowe Trails Partnership’s flagship trail network. It features 23 trails for a total of around 11 miles over the 320-acre park. Cady Hill Forest is easily accessed from the Stowe Recreation Path (which we’ll talk about next) and is one of the most active trails in the northeast U.S. due to being ridable for all ability levels.
The signature trail, named Florence, is known as one of the best flow trails in the region. However, more advanced riders may enjoy the Schween Haus loops, a classic technical singletrack. For a truly picturesque ride, consider riding the Cady Hill Climb Trail. This trail leads to the beautiful Green Chair Overlook. Then, ride down the bermed Upper Bear’s trail, continuing through the singletrack and into the parking lot. These are just a handful of the best trails in Cady Hill.
You can’t check bike trails Stowe VT off of your biking bucket list until you’ve ridden the Stowe Recreation Path. This is arguably one of the most stunning bike paths in Stowe, though it is more leisurely and less rugged. This paved trail runs 5.3 miles along the West Branch of the Little River, meandering past flourishing woods and offering lovely views of Mount Mansfield. You’ll also pass by shops, restaurants, lodges, and other attractions in the town of Stowe along the way. So, consider stopping for lunch and seeing the sights along the way!
This next trail is a moderately challenging 5.2-mile loop trail located off the northern end of Mountain Road, a famous Stowe route, and takes about two and a half hours to complete. So, be prepared for a refreshing ride through a thriving hardwood forest. This 513-acre scenic trail pod also includes access to portions of the Stowe Derby Trail and the Catamount Trail, a famous winter ski route over 300 miles long. Adams Camp also offers access to a larger trail network in the stunning Mt. Mansfield State Forest and Ranch Valley, as well as private trails owned by the Trapp Family Lodge, which we’ll talk about next.
Next on the list of bike trails Stowe VT is the exciting Trapp Family Lodge. This biking destination is a sprawling 2600-acre property featuring over 20 miles of double track trails through the picturesque mountains, grassfields, and dense forests. Moreover, this private destination features two skills parks, as well as eight miles of expert and intermediate single track that you’ll reminisce on for years to come. You and your biking crew can access the Trapp Family Lodge for small daily fee, but we promise—it’s worth it.
The Trapp Family Lodge Outdoor Center also has an active, on-call trail crew that maintains the grounds, so your ride should be well-maintained and undisrupted. What’s more, you can even ride hop after a day of blissful riding to Lager Lane and over to the von Trapp Brewery Bierhall for an ice-cold drink and delicious meal, paired with a beautiful view of the landscape.
Last but not least for this list of bike trails Stowe VT is the 1500-acre Sterling Forest. This breathtaking trailhead is full of fun intermediate and advanced mountain loops. So, this may not be the right trail for you if you have kids in tow. The secluded location and backcountry feel of Sterling Forest make it a popular spot for bikers looking for a new challenge and a bit of isolation. Moreover, the addition of Callagy Trail in 2017 has made it a hot spot. This latest addition is a hand-built technical trail known to be both difficult and thrilling for bikers. So, you won’t want to miss out on Sterling Forest on your next biking adventure.
