Wyoming may not be the first destination that comes to mind when you think of vacation spots, but it’s one of the best if you plan to spend a lot of time exploring nature. The Equality State is the tenth largest in the U.S., and much of its over 97,000 square miles of land is packed with forests and mountains. In fact, much of Yellowstone National Park is in Wyoming! Starting off our list of fun things to do in Wyoming is Yellowstone National Park. With almost 3,500 square miles of wilderness, Yellowstone is one of the biggest national parks in the country. Thanks to its size, it’s safe to say there’s a lot you’ll be able to enjoy here. You can explore nearly 1,000 miles of trails in the park. From deep canyons to enormous mountains, you’ll have plenty of hiking opportunities here.
Speaking of mountains, you can also go mountain biking around many of the park’s lakes and geysers. One geyser you definitely won’t want to miss is the Old Faithful. Watching the Old Faithful geyser erupt is a Yellowstone tradition. In fact, the geyser gets its name from how consistent its eruptions are. What’s more, the geyser’s eruptions are predicted with a 90 percent confidence rate! As a result, it’s easy to see one of its signature eruptions during your visit.
While Yellowstone is great, it’s not the only national park in Wyoming. In fact, one of the most fun things to do in Wyoming is visit the Grand Teton National Park. Much like Yellowstone, there are plenty of opportunities to hike, but unlike Yellowstone, Grand Teton is much more rugged. As a result, hiking can be a bit more challenging. With that said, hiking is still very doable; you’ll just need to remember to pace yourself and carry extra water.
Additionally, Grand Teton National Park is a great spot for boating, especially if you plan to go fishing. Snake River, Jackson Lake, and Polecat Creek are just a few of the great fishing spots in the park. Of course, Grand Teton also boasts plenty of wildlife. From bison grazing the fields to marmots in the mountains, you’ll never be far from Grand Teton’s wildlife. Speaking of wildlife, Grand Teton National Park is also just six miles away from the National Elk Refuge, another great place to see native fauna.
We’ve spent a lot of time talking about outdoor activities, but one of the most fun things to do in Wyoming is actually indoors. If you want to learn more about this state, one of the best ways to do it is at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. This building is actually home to five museums covering a wide range of subjects.
First, the Buffalo Bill Museum is a must-see for anyone who loves the Wild West. Aside from the museum’s namesake, you’ll learn about famous western figures like Annie Oakley, Pawnee Bill, and more! Next up is the Plains Indian Museum, which showcases the culture and history of the indigenous tribes that are native to the region. Do you like art? Then you’ll love the Whitney Western Art Museum, which boasts timeless classics from a variety of artists. You can also see over 10,000 artifacts from the Cody Firearms Museum or learn about the ecosystem at the Draper National History Museum.
